Small Tricks to Reduce Your Energy Usage Over Time:
There are steps you can take to reduce your utility usage at home. A few tricks here and there can really conserve energy over time — enough to see a difference in your utility bill.
Check out these power-saving suggestions that just might prove helpful in reducing your energy consumption and your power bill: Use power strips. Instead of plugging your appliances and gadgets directly into the wall, try using a power strip or surge protector. With one switch, you can quickly and easily turn off the power to every connected device, no longer worrying about “vampire” chargers and appliances pulling off electricity when you’re not using them. (There’s a power strip designed for desktop computers, as well. When you turn the computer off, the strip automatically stops providing power to connected peripherals, such as monitors and printers.)
Get blackout curtains. These curtains will keep bright sunlight from heating up your apartment during the summer. Make good use of your microwave. For reheating and for certain kinds of cooking, the microwave is more energy efficient than heating up the stove or oven. Steaming vegetables is a good example of microwave-friendly cooking.
Put a lid on it. Liquids, such as water or soup, will boil faster if you put a lid on the pot.
Give your thermostat a little nudge. Letting your apartment get just a little warmer in the summer or a little cooler in the winter can save you energy.
